Jude has never had very spectacular magic, though he's always been too sensitive to the kind that hurts people. Desperate for work, he hires on as a companion to a wealthy man—who turns out to be a severely injured dueling wizard named Ferrous. Any sort of violent magic makes Jude physically ill. But Ferrous thinks Jude is the only one who can heal him. He might just be right.

EXCERPT

Ferrous was looking around, passing a hand over his eyes and blinking rapidly. "I can see the light, and the shape of the plants. Let me look at you." He turned to Jude and drew back, squinting and blinking. "You're slim and dark haired, right?"

"Yes."

"And you'll stay? As my companion?" He started to reach for Jude again, and then held back instead.

Jude hesitated. It felt like saying yes to more than a job. It felt like a lot more. But somehow he didn't want to walk away, either. "Okay. If you want."

"Oh, I do want. Please speak to my cousin. He'll see about paying you and find you a room." Again he looked as if he was going to pull Jude close. But he only stared at him, long and hard and hungrily, as Jude got up and began to leave.

Something made him hesitate. "What did you mean, 'You're the one?'" It didn't make sense to him. Yes, Jude had the ability to fix some things, slowly and not very skillfully, but there were many better healing magicians out there. Jude's father had always scorned his gift, even though he'd sometimes wanted Jude to fix a cut, bruise, or hangover for him.

Ferrous hesitated and bit his lower lip. "I can't tell you just yet. But it's a good thing. It's…I'm very grateful to you." He ducked his head slightly.

He looked like he meant it so much that Jude couldn't help smiling. "I'm glad I could help." The words came out sounding shy.

"So am I, believe me."

"But I'm sure there are much better people out there for fixing your eyes."

Ferrous seemed to hesitate, to weigh his words. "Maybe you're the one I need," he said, and he spoke with such warmth and lack of pretense that Jude found himself blushing.

"Well—uh—okay. I'd better go now," he said, retreating quickly, glancing back to be sure he wasn't going to trip over something by walking backwards.

"Yes," agreed Ferrous, but he was still watching him—or at least staring at him with great intensity. His eyes weren't so filmy white now, as if they really were getting better.

Jude Magic Life with the Engelhards Book 1 edition by Hollis Shiloh Literature Fiction eBooks

This read was a little disappointing. I had really enjoyed Magic For Lee- it had a simple but well thought out plot and characters that filled it out nicely. Jude's Magic started well enough but the main character is totally passive and insipid- he undergoes no transformation that transforms his behavior. As a character he remains a leaf in the wind. An apparently villainous character is somehow suddenly a good character even though past actions do not back it up. Too many plot points are left unexplained- missing playing cards & hurtful magic that recently happened but never explained, an ambush involving a brother that makes no sense with regard to who knew what to set it all up, villains that we never meet- it feels like it was churned out without a great deal of thought. It does give a peek at what is an apparently early version of Peter and his nephew Joel- though in this case he is called Uncle Percy- they are obviously the same characters so it kind of messes with the integrity of the world that has been created. I might try another on the chance that this substandard story is a fluke- the author has writing abilities but it is disappointing to waste one's time on something that is written carelessly. This story deserves a rewrite. There is potential- just poorly executed. The nephew Joel (not named in this book) is a good character that needs his own story- but I hope it is a well crafted one. Hollis Shiloh has the potential to be an excellent writer if he chooses to be.

Jude Magic Life with the Engelhards Book 1 edition by Hollis Shiloh Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I was a little bit disappointed. I chanced buying this because I love 'Wes and Kit' and 'Robert and Louie', but I didn't like this one as much. And then 3 dollars for 60 pages is a little bit too much. It's not a bad story, don't get me wrong. I like the idea of the story, but somehow I wasn't touched by the characters and their love as much as I was with Wes & Kit, Robert & Louie.
This author writes in a way that leaves you crying for the next page. The characters have a depth to them that you can feel and see and associate with. It's a true love story in every sense of the word
This is a different kind of love story from what I've been reading. A refreshing change that I will reread.
I Liked it wish it had a little longer but was still good. Try it who ever reads this review you will like it.
If your looking for erotica or steamy f*** sessions , this isn't what you're looking for. Nevertheless. You should definitely give this book a go. It's cute, sweet (cupcake with extra frosting sweet), and good.

Jude is a magician. A rather unimpressive one. So he believes and so he's been led to believe. He's extremely sensitive to magic. Any kind of magic. Most importantly though , dueling magic. He's meek, shy, and easily scared. (Annoying , yes) Though he does have strength just in a different way than others. His family kicks him out for being gay and for being a weak magician. With no job prospects for his skills (simple magic) Jude answers an ad for a live in companion. When he reaches the home where the interview (great interview) is to be held, he meets the companion's cousin Alphonse. Alphonse is an a******. He really is. A lovable one though not a bigoted or hateful one. He just despises weakness. Yet he's loyal. So bear that in mind.

The companion is none other than a powerful dueling wizard named Ferrous. He's been seriously injured in a duel. A curse that made him invalid and the only way he can be cured is by his true love. " And wuv, tru wuv, will fowow you foweva. So tweasure your wuv." (If you didn't get that Princess Bride quote , we are done.) His true love (tru wuv) being (YOU GUESSED IT) Jude.
It's f****** adorable. ROMANTIC.

Jude does end up healing Ferrous . Ferrous and Jude do end up falling in love. However their love wasn't an easy one. They both had some situations to deal with. Ferrous with his dueling career and Jude with his magic. It was a good read. I feel better for having had read it.

May i also add that i was incredibly impressed by the use of vowels in the characters' names? I mean , come on. Alphonse. Ferrous. BRAVO.
